Isn’t it funny how some suburbs maintain a strong sense of identity throughout their many incarnations? East Ryde is one such suburb, with its wildly varying history underpinned by a flair for the dramatic.

Located 12km north-west of the CBD, the area was once a turpentine-ironbark forest; unfortunately, this ecosystem is now considered endangered, following significant clearing of the natural vegetation. Wallumatta Nature Reserve which is located in East Ryde is the largest surviving area of turpentine-ironbark forest and is considered a ‘demonstration site’, thanks to the significant regeneration work that’s been undertaken.

Following European settlement, the area became part of the Field of Mars Common, which was a space for settlers with small land parcels to keep their livestock. However, as the landscape was quite rugged, it quickly became a hideout for robbers and escaped convicts. This led to attempts to sell off the land to raise money for major infrastructure, but sales were slow, development experienced several false starts, and it took the best part of a century for important transport connections to be built.

These days, East Ryde is a small, quiet suburb, surrounded by water and bushland on three sides. The ‘Dress Circle Estate’, which was named for its position on top of a ridge and features streets named after some of Australia’s biggest stage and screen stars, makes up most of the suburb. Covenants control development in this area, limiting block sizes to about 650m2 and allowing only one property per block.

The remainder of East Ryde residents live in a smaller collection of properties located along the banks of the Lane Cove River. These homes tend to be larger and more modern, and feature views across the local mangrove wetland.

• Blenheim Park in nearby North Ryde is great for a day out with the whole family. Living

In many ways, the City of Ryde is a perfect cross-section, bringing together many different sections of the Sydney community. While the generally population clearly skews to the higher end of the income scale, its mix of housing options (varying from large waterfront mansions to high density apartment blocks) and the presence of a major university (Macquarie), helps balance this out.

Even its location is, in many ways, a middle ground. Despite sitting firmly in the Northern Suburbs, the area is sometimes considered part of the North Shore, and still maintains a strong connection with the Inner West and Western Suburbs. It also typifies Sydney’s love-hate relationship with commuting, as sporadic public transport connections and frequent traffic issues make travelling even relatively short distances a real trial at times.

All of this comes together to create a community that is both varied and largely self-sufficient. The great mix of employment, education, entertainment, retail, and dining options means that almost every taste is catered for and that residents can find everything they need close to home.
